What is "Mafficking"?

Rowdy Rejoicing in the Streets: The Birth of a Term

The term “mafficking” is a linguistic relic forged in the crucible of the South African War (the Second Boer War). It refers specifically to the wild, unrestrained public outbursts that erupted across Great Britain following the lifting of the gruelling Siege of Mafikeng (then spelled Mafeking) on May 17, 1900.

For 217 agonizing days, a small British garrison was surrounded and blockaded by Boer forces. Back in Britain, public anxiety was wound tight. When news of the successful relief finally reached London, the dam broke. The populace flooded the streets in a state of sheer, unadulterated ecstasy.

The resulting celebrations were unlike anything Victorian society had seen. It was not a polite, organized parade, but a noisy, boisterous, and chaotic explosion of joy. The streets rang with songs, drums, and dancing until dawn.

Journalists of the era struggled to describe this new phenomenon of spontaneous, ecstatic mob celebration. Casting around for a verb, they took the name of the town itself and transformed it: thus, “to maffick” was born. To maffick is to make a joyful racket, to celebrate without restraint, and to reclaim the cold streets with thunderous energy.

Our Visual Identity & Kit

Formed in the twilight of 2023 and performing since 2024, Mafficking Border Morris represents a modern, theatrical evolution of the traditional dance style.

No Tattered Rags Here

While traditional Border Morris sides are synonymous with rustic, heavy tatter-rag coats, Mafficking deliberately rejects this aesthetic. We are a young, sharp, and theatrical side. Our performance attire is strictly Gothic-Victorian.

Our dancers dress in coordinated black accented with individual rich colours, wearing Victorian-inspired silhouettes including waistcoats, formal shirts, dark trousers, and elegant dresses. Our music is driven by the sharp clack of heavy wooden poles and the rhythmic thud of heavy boots. We aim to look like an assembly of Victorian phantoms that have stepped straight out of a gothic penny dreadful.

Our Laws & Covenant

Even the most rebellious rackets require order to thrive. Our side is governed by an official, democratic constitution that outlines our values, code of conduct, and organizational rules.
